Monday, October 1st, 2007

Greens Leader Bob Brown has written to Shadow Environment Minister Peter Garrett asking him to define ‘world’s best practice’ which Garrett insists is Labor’s guide to accepting Gunns’ pulp mill.

“Any pulp mill in Tasmania must meet world’s best practice environmental standards and outcomes” - Peter Garrett (more…)

Greens welcome High Court decision on prisoners’ voting rights

Sunday, September 30th, 2007

Senator Kerry Nettle welcomed today’s High Court decision that found part of the Howard Government’s changes to the Electoral Act unconstitutional and therefore invalid.

“The High Court today has found that the Prime Minister has abused his control of both houses of parliament by trying to pass unconstitutional laws that take peoples’ rights away. Senator Nettle said.

“The High Court is now the last bastion of fairness by acting in defence of democracy in the face of the Howard Government’s attacks. (more…)

Police Threaten Court Action To Stop Greens MPs Holding Media Conference In Martin Place

Tuesday, September 4th, 2007

NSW Police have threatened eleventh-hour legal action against Sylvia Hale MLC in order to stop the NSW Greens MP holding a media conference with 21 mock world leaders dressed as lifesavers in Martin Place on Friday morning at 11:00 am. The media conference is to be addressed by Greens Senator Kerry Nettle and Ms Hale who will call on the APEC leaders to take serious action to address climate change.

Ms Hale was served with a letter from NSW Police General Counsel Michael Antrum this afternoon threatening legal action if the MP did not agree to move the media conference from Martin Place. (more…)

Desalination plant is going to be dangerous and unnecessary

Sunday, September 2nd, 2007

The cost of suspending the construction contract for the Kurnell desalination plant would be less than the damage done by completing and operating the water facility, according to Greens NSW MP John Kaye.

Dr Kaye said: “Even if the Iemma government had to pay 15% of the total contract value to put construction on hold, a one-off payment of $264 million would be cheaper than the on-going costs of paying for water we do not need, destruction of the Botany Bay seafloor species and the risk of disturbing the migration patterns of humpback whales. PM right to insist pulp mill satisfies ‘all environmental considerations’

Saturday, September 1st, 2007

Prime Minister Howard is right to insist that the pulp mill satisfies ‘all environmental considerations’ before a decision on Gunns proposed pulp mill in the Tamar Valley is made, Greens Leader Bob Brown said today.

“The problem for Gunns is that its mill proposal cannot and does not satisfy the guidelines originally set for it, or the environmental or business expectations of the 100,000 people living in the Tamar Valley,” Senator Brown said.

“And it is an unsurmountable problem that Gunns has failed to do the baseline studies for scientists to evaluate what the sixty thousand tonnes of effluent a day will do to Bass Strait. ” (more…)

CountryLink fares rise by as much as 22%

Saturday, September 1st, 2007

Greens MP and transport spokesperson Lee Rhiannon said CountryLink fare hikes of up to 22 percent from 1 September 2007 were unreasonable and likely to drive more passengers away from this essential public
service.

“Yesterday’s ticket increases of 4.8 to 22 percent, depending on which season someone travels, shows the government’s contempt for rural and regional NSW,” Ms Rhiannon said.

“Fares rose by 8 percent in 2005 and pensioners using their annual travel vouchers were slugged with a 15 percent booking fee in March 2006. (more…)
