More Dodgy Wollongong Council Deals

Friday, March 7th, 2008

NSW Greens MP Sylvia Hale has called in parliament for the new Council administrators or the ICAC to investigate a range of controversial Wollongong Council planning decisions in light of the corrupt conduct involving the Council uncovered by the ICAC.

Ms Hale has singled out two projects by the developer Jempak as well as the Platinum development in Crown Street and the City Beach Function Centre as requiring investigation.

Ms Hale was particularly critical of former Wollongong Council General Manager Rod Oxley’s role in a number of developments and raised questions about the relationship between former mayor Alex Darling and developer Ken Tugrul.

Ms Hale questioned the legality of the Council’s agreement to pay the costs of former general manager Rod Oxley’s legal representation at the ICAC hearings. (more…)

Minister dodges GM question on conflict of interest

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

“In the wake of the developer donations scandal surrounding the Government, this is most definitely not the time to be lowering standards of accountability and transparency,” said Upper House Greens MP Ian Cohen.

Questions were put to Ian Macdonald in Parliament about whether or not he would take action, if it emerged that a member of his expert committee advising him on GM issues had failed to declare a direct or indirect pecuniary interest.

“Minister Macdonald twice dodged my questions yesterday and today on conflict of interest at a time when debate rages in the community about exactly who will benefit from the legalisation of GM food crops in NSW. (more…)

Housing plans must address energy and transport

Tuesday, March 4th, 2008

Australian Greens climate change spokesperson, Senator Christine Milne, today called on Prime Minister Rudd and Premier Brumby to link their plans for addressing the housing crisis to highly energy efficient housing and siting on effective,
networked public transport routes.

Senator Milne said “Cheap housing on the urban fringes will make will make it harder for struggling Australians to make ends meet unless it is required to be energy efficient and on public transport routes. With oil at US$100 a barrel already draining pockets, and an emissions trading scheme set to increase energy prices, we cannot address an issue like
this in a vacuum. (more…)

Iemma Government corrupts NSW agriculture – GM canola legalised

Monday, March 3rd, 2008

The latest victim of poor governance in NSW is the state’s clean, green agricultural reputation. It is now legal to grow commercial quantities of genetically modified canola in NSW.

“The biotech companies will be the only winners from today as the GM horse bolts out of Parliament House,” said Upper House Greens MP Ian Cohen.

“The Canadian experience demonstrates that Bayer and Monsanto will rake in over 90% of the profits from the introduction of GM canola by selling their herbicides and from collecting maximum royalties and crop technology licence fees. (more…)

councillor contribution for March edition of the Palerang Bulletin

Saturday, March 1st, 2008

At the February 28 meeting in Bungendore, Council decided to fluoridate the town water supplies of Braidwood, Bungendore and Captains Flat.  This followed a survey that was sent last year to all affected ratepayers, and some fairly solid lobbying by the NSW Department of Health.  I was one of two councillors who opposed the motion, and in speaking against tried to represent the views of a substantial number of respondents.  (more…)
