Statement to Council on Majors Creek goldmine

It is beholden on us at the local government level to ensure that activities like mining do not make it impossible for our residents to live in their own homes. It is appalling that a mining company’s activities override the rights of people to live simply and comfortably and have adequate sleep. The general situation with mining in this country, which has a long record of destroying farmland, damaging ecosystems, polluting waterways, destroying Aboriginal sites of significance, sucking out huge amounts of underground and riverine water and generally impacting negatively on communities, is unacceptable to anyone who puts social justice and quality of life before gold and the dollar and I hope that we will do everything we can to lessen the impact of this particular goldmine on our residents.

  1. Bill Waterhouse Says:

    Dear Catherine and friends,
please keep an eye on the Majors Creek community website (just google it) for information about this Community doing its best. We are working hard to get best outcomes for the residents by establishing and maintaining an open dialogue between the mining company and the people of “The Creek”.

  2. Peter Symonds Says:

Why does such emotive language get used this seems like a complaint for complaint sake.
    a) What aboriginal sacred sites.
    b) What Destroyed farm land
    c) What polluted water ways
    d) Generally impacting negatively on communities, Would that be caused by the jobs created, the money that flows into the community, the new schools that will be built, upgrading bridges, making better roads that make less pollution.

Now really we need good assessments of what is going on not hype and scare mongering. So we need to know what the actual concerns are so as they can be constructively acted upon.
