NSW Government should enforce moratorium on high risk gas exploration

Greens MP and mining spokesperson Cate Faehrmann is calling for a moratorium on coal seam gas exploration in NSW until a full examination of the environmental and social impacts has proven it safe.

“Documents revealed today by the Sydney Morning Herald show Peabody Gas is well aware that the high environmental impacts of coal seam gas exploration will be unacceptable to the community,” said Ms Faehrmann.

“This is a direct admission on the extent of damage coal seam gas exploration could cause to the Sydney water catchment.

“Coal seam gas exploration contaminates water supply, draws down on aquifers and risks healthy soils.

“The NSW Government is offering up our farmlands and pristine aquifers to overseas mining giants to the detriment of our food security and water supply.

“The potential for substantial greenhouse gas emissions from coal seam methane must also be examined more closely. Methane is even more destructive to the atmosphere than carbon dioxide.

“All sides of politics should support a moratorium on coal seam gas exploration until it is proven safe,” said Ms Faehrmann.
