Candidates on fire at Festival forum

Sunday, April 7th, 2013

Currently known candidates for Eden-Monaro will meet for the first time in a political forum to be held on Saturday April 13 as part of the Two Fires Festival of Arts and Activism. The Festival, to honour the legacy of writer and activist Judith Wright and named after one of her poems, has been held in Braidwood every two years since 2005. This is the first time there has been a specifically political event at the Festival.

“It’s about time,” says Catherine Moore, Greens candidate for Eden-Monaro.

“There is often a disconnect between activists working for change in their communities, and the politicians who are making the decisions which affect us all. Take the example of the Iraq War, where hundreds of thousands of Australians joined millions around the world protesting against it. But it made not a scrap of difference to the governments of the time.” (more…)

The Greens are calling on NSW Labor MPs to reject Premier Morris Iemma’s push to sell off NSW electricity generators and retailers and follow the lead of their federal leader Kevin Rudd who has just ratified the Kyoto protocol.

Greens NSW MP John Kaye said: “Premer Iemma’s privatisation plan is designed not only to rip off a windfall profit for state revenue but also to build a new coal fired power station.

“Both private ownership and more coal burning will push up this state’s greenhouse gas emissions.

Iemma’s electricity privatisation undermines Rudd’s Kyoto commitment

“Meanwhile Prime Minister Rudd has ratified the Kyoto protocols. As the United Nations’ chief climate negotiator Yvo de Boer points out, the legal binding agreement will impose financial penalties if this nation fails to reach its targets. (more…)

Leaders of the Mutitjulu community today questioned the need for a military occupation of their small community.

We welcome any real support for indigenous health and welfare and even two police will assist, but the Howard Government declared an emergency at our community over two years ago - when they appointed an administrator to our health clinic - and since then we have been without a doctor, we have less health workers, our council has been sacked all our youth and health programmes have been cut. This translunar coast photograph extends from the Mediterranean Sea area to the Antarctica south polar ice cap. This is the first time the Apollo trajectory made it possible to photograph the south polar ice cap. Note the heavy cloud cover in the Southern Hemisphere. Almost the entire coastline of Africa is clearly visible. The Arabian Peninsula can be seen at the northeastern edge of Africa. The large island off the coast of Africa is Madagascar. The Asian mainland is on the horizon toward the northeast.” (Wikipedia)

The topic for World Environment Day for 2007 is “Melting Ice – a Hot Topic?” During International Polar Year, WED 2007 focuses on the effects that climate change is having on polar ecosystems and communities, on other ice- and snow-covered areas of the world, and the resulting global impacts.
